BMW Working On AI Based Paint Shop.

- Pilot project underway at Munich facility

- The algorithm monitors more than 160 parameters

BMW believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can bring greater accuracy in controlling highly sensitive systems of automotive production. So the Bavarian carmaker has launched a pilot project to use AI in its Munich plant's paint shop.

In an ideal paint shop, despite the state-of-the-art filtration technology, the content of the finest dust particles in the paint lines varies depending on the ambient air drawn inside. So if the dust content exceeds a specific limit, wet paint may get trapped. Thus the particles within them darken the painted surface. Therefore AI experts from BMW have found a way to avoid this situation using AI. Typically, each painted car undergoes an automatic surface inspection at a body paint shop. AI scientists have used this collected data to develop a comprehensive database for dust collecting analysis. They are now implementing algorithms to compare live data from dust particle sensors in paint booths and dryers with this database.

Currently this AI application has two benefits. First, where the dust level is determined to increase due to weather or during a prolonged dry period, the algorithm can detect this beforehand and suggest, for example, a pre-filter replacement time. . Secondly, different patterns can be detected where this algorithm is used with other analytical tools. The AI algorithm monitors more than 160 features related to the car body with the available data and can accurately estimate the quality of the paint application. Therefore AI experts see enormous potential in dust particle analysis.

BMW believes that it can be used in the production of AI solution chains when a comprehensive database for the algorithm has been developed. Because this application requires additional measurement points and even more accurate sensor data for cleaning stations. The German carmaker is confident that once the pilot project at the original plant in Munich is completed, it will be possible to begin dust particle analysis at other vehicle plants as well.
